Recently read an article about how parents ruin their children's lives by expecting too much of them. True, but it isn't just about the parent-child relationship, it's true of any relationship. You expect too much from your friends and family, from life itself. Why? Why do you think you'll get it? What guarantee do you have that things will work out in your favour? Why should they? Why do you believe you deserve what you want?
I don't think one ever gets what they deserve. Who is to measure all that, anyway? Based on what? Who set these standards? Who made these rules?
As I see it, one ought not to expect anything, or better still, expect the worst. That way, if you don't get it, you're armed to handle the depression, but if you do, you're happy. That's what I call a convenient attitude. That's what keeps me going.
Ah! Pessimism!
